Steve Balut - etyres Worthing Franchise Owner

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

I am 55 years old and have been operating this franchise for 15 years. My previous career was in banking which lasted 25 years until I opted to take redundancy.

Why did you go down the franchise route? What made you choose your industry? And why did you choose your franchise?

I was looking for something completely different where I could be my own boss and operate autonomously. The Motor industry combined work with personal interest. This franchise allowed operation with the least amount of interference than other options.

How did you raise the finance?

    Personal resources.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

Initial induction training of 1 week: 2 weeks “on the job” with another franchise and a training course at a major tyre manufacturer.

How would you describe your role as a franchisee?

Autonomous deliverer of goods and services.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

Start : 8.00a.m – gather together the days schedule: wait for deliveries: hit the road and execute the days schedule: return to yard and prepare next day’s orders and deal with office paperwork: Depart for home 6.00p.m (ish): Fire up computer and deal with other office items, answer emails, promote/build business, update Accounts, invoice account customers etc: Finish 8-8.30p.m(ish).
    What challenges have you faced?

As a self-employed sole trader you don’t get paid for days off so any sickness costs. Staying healthy is important. Arranging a holiday costs double in comparison to a paid employee ‘cos you have to pay for the holiday and whilst off you are not earning.
Operating on your own means you have to cope with all crises that arise. Van breakdowns, deliveries not turning up, awkward customers, customer no shows, supplier problems etc etc etc. Organising yourself and your time is always a challenge as well.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Yes and No. I wouldn’t say it has any more than a complete career change would have done. It’s just totally different.

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise?

Research, Research, Research. Make sure the franchise you are looking at is right for you. Expect long hours – you reap what you sow, in other words, you get out what you put in – don’t expect anything on a plate!

What are your plans for the future?

    Retirement

    Would you do it again?

    Yes. I have no regrets.
